External Star Washers are best when using larger bolts and screw head diameters. This creates the most effective locking grip, as the teeth are made to bite into the bearing surface.
Unlike the Internal Star washer, an External Star washer (also know as tooth lock washer) provides a stronger hold as the teeth can bite into a larger radius. 
This makes External Star Washers ideal for larger screws and bolt heads.
